Sal
Originally founded in 1975, just a year after independence, the Associação Regional de Futebol do Sal (ARFS) facilitates multiple competitions each year. This includes a regional championship (1st and 2nd division) and regional cup whose winners go on to compete in the national championship and cup competition, respectively. ARFS hosts a SuperTaça, or Supercup, between the prior year’s regional champions and regional cup winners. An opening tournament also occurs during the fall each year, prior to the start of the regional championships.
Games are played at the Estádio Marcelo Leitão in Espargos. Académico do Aeroporto have won 15 regional titles and Académica do Sal are the closest with 9. These two teams, along with GD Palmeira are the only teams from the Ilha do Sal to win the national championship.
